What is an Internet Domain Name?

A Domain Name is an identification string that defines a realm of administrative autonomy, authority or control within the Internet. Apart from serving as names for internet resources such as computers, networks and services, Domain Names are also used as simple identification labels to indicate ownership, establish a unique identity of organisations or individuals.

A Domain Name consists of one or more parts, technically called labels separated by dots. The right-most label is called the top-level domain name. The label before the top-level separated by the dot is often referred to as the second-level, and so forth.

Every country has their unique top-level domain name. Examples; .AU for Australia, .FJ for Fiji, .TV for Tuvalu, etc. Solomon Islands were given .SB as the country’s top-level domain name.

Why have my domain names at the second-level?

The simple answer is, it keeps things shorter hence easier to remember. You do not want your partners or customers to forget your domain name. You want them to be able to remember you domain name just like that.

Why own a personalised .SB domain name?

In the modern world, people nowadays often turn to the web (websites) for information. It pays to have a domain name that reflects your presence, whether if be business, organisation or even as an individual. By registering a .SB domain name, you do not have to tell the world where your business is. The .SB does that.

A personalised domain name enables one to have a custom web address that allows you to take control of your online identity by directing visitors to any site. Register www.YourName.com then forward it to any website or blog or to other pages you control, like your Facebook or LinkedIn profile pages. There’s no limit to how many personal domains you may have.

I have an existing .SB domain name. What will happen to that if I apply for the same but without the existing conventional second-level domain names?

For those who have an existing domain name, Our Telekom will reserve your matching names at the second-level. We will allow you a period of 12 months to decide on whether you want to keep the name and pay for it or do away with either one.

Why should I have my personal domain registered or pointing to certain sites?

Pointing your personal domain to your Facebook or LinkedIn page is a great way to build your online presence, especially if you’re not ready to build your own website.

You’ll always control what your visitors see when they go to www.yourname.com.

A personal domain is a great choice for businesses as well. It allows you to control every aspect of your brand – even the address you give to your customers.

Can I use my domain for emails and still pointing it to Facebook and another site?

Yes. Having an email address that uses your personal domain — you@yourdomain.com — makes your business look legit and makes you look more professional

Can I point my domain only to my Facebook page only until I build my website?
