OUR TELEKOM WESTERN, CHOISEUL & MALAITA CUSTOMER SERVICES AFFECTED BY SUBMARINE CABLE BREAKAGE ON THE DOMESTIC LINKS

Our Telekom wishes to advise our good customers that Our Telekom telecommunication services to all Western and Choiseul customers is currently out of service due to damage caused to the domestic undersea submarine cable links that carries Telekom services to these locations.

The Submarine Cable domestic links is provided by the Solomon Islands Submarine Cable Company Limited (SISCC) and Telekom connectivity to these regions is via these links. The damage to these links is currently affecting Our Telekom customer services to these regions.

Whilst Malaita services was also impacted, services such as corporate services and Mobile 2G and 3G access to some tower sites have been restored via Microwave connectivity. Fixed line and 4G services and more tower sites will be restored as the link capacity to Malaita is upgraded by Telekom engineers.

The SISCC team is currently working to restore the damaged undersea cables which is expected to take some time. In the meantime Our Telekom is looking at other connectivity options to restore services to the Western and Choiseul regions to minimize the impact on our customers.

It should be noted that while fiber optic cables are the preferred means of connectivity due to their high-speed and reliability, other connectivity options such as microwave or satellite communication provides a viable alternative in situations like now where the fiber optic cables are damaged or unavailable.

There is expected to be some differences in customer experience when it comes to connectivity via fiber optic cables and satellite or microwave. Fiber optic cables provide faster speeds and lower latency, resulting in a smoother and more seamless user experience. In contrast, satellite communication is often slower and suffers from higher latency due to the distance the signal has to travel.

Our Telekom will provide further updates to our good customers regarding the submarine cable outage as developments and improvements occur.
