Our Telekom is pleased to announce this update to the ongoing restoration of its services to Malaita, Western, and Choiseul provinces.

As of Monday the 22nd of May, all but two of the 3G sites in Choiseul are operational, including Taro 2G and 3G services. All other Choiseul sites on satellite backhaul were not affected by the domestic fibre break. Our dedicated teams are actively working to bring the remaining 3G sites online to ensure that the entire Choiseul region returns to normal.

For the Western region, significant progress has been made in restoring services. Noro 3G services have been restored as of Monday 22nd and TTV and Fixed lines are already operational. Work is in progress to ensure satellite capacity upgrades required to enable 3G connectivity and internet services in the Western region are achieved during this week. The target is to have most services fully operational in the Western region by the end of this week.

Auki Services are operational, providing seamless connectivity to the Malaita region.

The recent disruptions to services were a result of damage caused to the domestic undersea submarine cable links supplied by the Solomon Islands Submarine Cable Company (SISCC). Telekom uses the undersea cable to carry its services to Malaita, Choiseul, and the Western region. To ensure services remain operational Telekom is diverting traffic onto and upgrading satellite and microwave links to ensure service access to customers.

A statement from SISCC revealed that the main cause of the damage to the domestic cable system was a fishing vessel anchoring inside a non-anchoring zone in Honiara. The repair of the domestic cable will involve mobilizing the cable repair ship. We understand from the Repair ship that restoration works will commence from the last week of June and service restoration to be complete by the first week of July.
